October Newsletter ~ Your Oral Microbiome
Welcome to the first part of my three-month series.
Over the next few months, I will be talking about three important microbiomes in your body—the ones in your mouth, gut, and vaginal area. These microscopic ecosystems of bacteria and other microbes affect your health in many ways, from how you digest food to how well your immune system works.
This month, I am starting with the oral microbiome—the entrance to your body’s health. Your mouth is home to many different microbes that help keep you healthy. The balance of these microbes can impact not just your teeth and gums, but your whole body.
In this edition, I’ll walk you through how to maintain a healthy oral microbiome, what can happen when it becomes unbalanced, and some simple yet effective tips to support it. Be sure to download my free 15 page Holistic Oral Health Guide, where I cover everything you need to know about caring for your oral microbiome and boosting your overall health!
Quote of the Month
Dr. Dominik Nischwitz:
“The mouth is a biological ecosystem, and everything you do to it impacts the entire body. The oral microbiome is like a rainforest; it needs balance and diversity to thrive.”
Prayer of the Month
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the intricate design of our bodies, for the many systems that work together to keep us healthy and well. As we focus this month on the oral microbiome, we ask for Your wisdom in caring for this gateway to our health.
Help us to be mindful of how we nurture our bodies, and guide us in making choices that support the balance and wellness You’ve designed within us.
May we honor You by caring for our bodies with love and gratitude, knowing that even the smallest parts of us—like the microbes in our mouths—play a role in Your perfect plan. We ask for strength and knowledge to protect this balance so that we may live fully in the health You desire for us.
In Your name, we pray, Amen.
Part 1: A Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body: Why Your Oral Microbiome Counts
The oral microbiome, a complex ecosystem of trillions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses, plays a crucial role in maintaining both oral and overall health. A balanced oral microbiome is essential for preventing oral diseases such as cavities and gum disease. However, there’s more to it—what grows in our mouth, whether healthy or harmful, is often swallowed and can affect the gut microbiome as well. Research increasingly shows that oral health not only influences gut health but also sets the foundation for overall wellness.
A healthy oral microbiome supports the immune system and protects against harmful bacteria that can cause inflammation and infections. However, when this balance is disrupted—a condition known as dysbiosis—it can lead to gum inflammation, tooth decay, bad breath, and more serious conditions like periodontitis.
The impact of an unhealthy oral microbiome extends beyond the mouth. Research links poor oral health to more serious conditions such as cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
To maintain a healthy oral microbiome and prevent these diseases, it’s essential to understand how to assess its balance and implement effective oral care practices and treatments.
MY ORAL MICROBIOME
During my dental cleaning, I got to see what’s really going on behind the plaque—bacteria at work! This is like my dental report card, showing how well I’m caring for my mouth’s delicate ecosystem.
A healthy mouth, healthy body!

As I wrap up this newsletter on holistic oral care, it’s essential to recognize that nurturing your oral microbiome is not only vital for your mouth but also serves as the foundation for a healthy digestive process. Next month, we’ll turn our attention to the gut microbiome, and you might be surprised to discover just how much your mouth and the act of chewing influence your gut health!
My final tip for optimal oral care:
Our stomachs do not have teeth, God gave us teeth in our mouths for a reason!
Chewing your food thoroughly and allowing your saliva to mix with each bite is a crucial yet often overlooked stage of digestion. This process not only mechanically breaks down food but also enables saliva, rich in enzymes, to initiate chemical digestion. By prioritizing your oral microbiome, practicing good chewing habits, and staying hydrated, you set the stage for a healthy digestive cascade.
This leads us to the next microbiome in our series: the gut, which we’ll examine in greater detail in November. As you continue to care for your teeth and gums, remember that you’re also supporting your entire digestive system.
Finally, I encourage you to practice mindful eating—savor each bite and allow your body to do its work effectively. Everything is interconnected, and by embracing these mindful practices, you’re enhancing your overall wellness from the very first bite.
All of my tips and recommendations including toothpastes, screening options, nutrition and how to find a biological dentist in your area, are in my Oral Care Guide, so make sure to download your free copy for more detailed information.
